What is the Dakota Access Pipeline

The Dakota Access Pipeline is a 1,172 mile long underground pipeline running from the Bakken region of North Dakota to Illinois. Created by the company Energy Transfer Partners (ETP).

This is Executive Order 13766, signed by President Trump in January of 2017. This executive order allows the construction of High priority infrastructure projects. While this document does not specifically state that the Dakota Access Pipeline can be constructed it allows for later actions to be taken for DAPL to use. This Executive order also changes Obama Administration actions against oil pipelines.

This is a Memorandum on the Construction of the DAPL created by the Trump Administration using Executive order 13766 to get the permits needed to finish construction of the DAPL. Without the nessisary Enviromental Impact Survey which normally take multiple years to complete.

This is a small news article informing us about an important update at the time (2020) where oil flowing in the DAPL had to be halted due to a court order. This was because they needed to get an essential environmental impact survey done.

This article from the EJ atlas, talks about how in 2020 the courts found that DAPL violated NEPA, and glossed over a potenial oil spill during the process to get permits for the completion of the project.

This article by the EJ Atlas, talks about the historical prevelance of the Greater Souix tribe. They talk about the land theft by the United States government a few years after the fort laraime treaty was signed, due to the Black Hills gold rush. The land was later used for other governmental purposes like Mount Rushmore.

Starting in 1920 the Souix tribe filed a law suit that did not finish until 1980 in which the US government said that they claimed the land using emminent domain, however, they did not pay the price of the land, they awarded the tribe $102 million dollars at the time, which the tribe did not accept because they just want their sacrad land back.

The atlas also has this really interesting section at the bottom that explains potential impacts / impacts that have been seen because of environmental harm.
